"Change won't happen without blood," Jax Teller proclaims early on in this week's Sons of Anarchy. By the end of the hour, blood has been spilled, but not in a way that Jax -- or anyone -- may have expected, and certainly not in a way that brings about any change.
Things are even more worse off than they were after last week's brutal Jax vs. Clay prison fight. Gemma shattering the plate during that nightmare of a dinner scene was a nice way to illustrate the very real fracture that's hit the club.
And we still haven't hit bottom. Zobelle is dancing around SAMCRO, which has virtually no allies left. Any victories achieved tonight -- like Jax, Bobby and Opie getting payback against Tom Arnold's sleazy porn producer Caruso -- were horribly short-lived.
Of course, we can only assume it was Caruso who killed poor Luann. Like Zobelle, he might have friends in unexpected places. As we learned last night, Zobelle is less a true believer than someone like Weston (and man, I wish they'd do more with Henry Rollins), and likely someone who's out to make a profit.
At this point, that makes him a dangerously level-headed opponent for someone like Jax, who's so committed to the club that he'd literally die before taking off his jacket. This is going to get so, so ugly, and I can't wait.
Some other thoughts:
- After watching last season, I pretty much figured Chuck -- the compulsive masturbator/mob accountant -- didn't have long to live. But here he was again tonight, minus most of the fingers that allowed his habit.
- Chibs' wife showing up can't be good news, right?
- It took me several episodes before I realized that the Niners gang was one that figured fairly heavily into The Shield (where SOA creator Kurt Sutter was a writer). Makes me wonder: will The Shield's ubiquitous Aremenian mob make an appearance here?
