Of course, by the time this is posted, things may have changed, but as I write this, word is that the season of Law & Order will be its last.
The show went from being a guaranteed return to NBC's line-up next year to basically cancelled within the span of a few hours on Thursday.
I've always loved Law & Order, but news of its possible demise doesn't exactly make me sad; there's dozens of episodes I've never seen, and the reruns never get old. Besides, despite a recent upswing in quality with the newest cast, the show's glory days died with Jerry Orbach.
(The picture here represents my favorite cast, circa season five.)
For me it's interesting that -- assuming the show is cancelled -- it's ending at the same time as Lost. The two shows represent polar opposites on my TV globe: one is comfort food, a world where things are usually resolved inside of an hour, with or without some ripped-from-the-headlines social commentary; the other is a show that occupies deep places in my heart and brain long after it ends.
Still, there was part of me that thought Law & Order would live on for years to come, with new casts replacing old ones. So goodbye, police who investigate crimes and the district attorneys who prosecuted the offenders. These were their stories.
