Hearing people say this week's Fringe was an "improvement" over last week's solid, creepy "Over There" outing have me puzzled.
To me, "6B" had me thinking something I hadn't thought about this show in a long time: "This would be terrible if it weren't for John Noble." In this case, Walter brought both comic relief and dramatic weight to what was kind of a flat story with a cloying resolution.
As Ryan McGee put it on the Monkeys as Critics blog, it's one thing for the show to have a heart, quite another for it to begin resolving its weekly case via the power of love. (And yeah, technically, logic actually won the day here, as the thing that breaks the spell over Alice is learning that the other Derek had children.)
Still, I thought Walter's debate about introducing the Amber into our world was a compelling one. Doing so would be something he -- and the show -- would have trouble coming back from. I just wished the episode hadn't pivoted on convincing a woman to get over her dead husband. Oh well...next week looks promising.
Other thoughts:
- Walter: "Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. I proved it in 1973." When do we get THAT flashback episode?
- Yay, Velvet Underground.
- Did anyone else expect the Over There version of Derek did recognize Olivia, having just seen her counterpart hours earlier?
